(Boise, Idaho) – The State of Idaho continues to take decisive action to ensure the accuracy and integrity of its voter rolls. County elections offices throughout the state have completed their biennial review and maintenance of the voter registration system, resulting in the removal or cleanup of 144,121 voter records statewide due to inactivity, change of address, or ineligibility. Following these voter roll maintenance efforts, the number of registered voters in Idaho stands at 1,017,691.
“Ensuring the integrity of our elections starts with maintaining accurate voter rolls,” said Secretary of State Phil McGrane. “Thanks to the hard work of our county clerks and our collaboration with state and federal agencies, Idaho continues to lead the way in protecting our elections. We are committed to ensuring that only eligible voters are on our rolls, and we are taking every step necessary to make that happen.”
The biennial list maintenance process, required by Idaho Code 34-435, is critical to keeping voter records current. Regular list maintenance occurs continuously throughout the year and incorporates data from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, the Department of Corrections, and other government databases.
In addition to these efforts, Idaho became the first state in the nation to take executive action ensuring that only U.S. citizens can vote. This initiative, carried out with the support of Governor Brad Little, reflects a collaborative approach to ensuring the accuracy of voter registration in the state. The Only Citizens Will Vote Act Executive Order prompted a thorough review and verification of all voters registered in Idaho with the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) databases.
“This effort underscores Idaho’s commitment to ensuring that only eligible citizens are on our voter rolls,” McGrane added. “Our partnership with state and federal agencies has provided additional safeguards to protect the integrity of Idaho’s elections.”
Election offices sent notices to affected individuals prior to cancellation. Voters who have not cast a ballot in the last four years may re-register at VoteIdaho.gov, at their county election office, or at the polls during early voting or on Election Day.
